Xochitlan
Real-world touchstone: Mesoamerican forest cultures — sacred ruins, earned names, animal marks.
Xochitlan is a deep, ruin-studded forest where paths shift with the moon and dangerous beasts roam freely — a place most outsiders consider cursed and the Xochitlani consider home. Being Xochitlani isn't about bloodline; it's about the forest itself. Anyone who lives there long enough develops a mark of the wild — cat-slit eyes, striped hair, a hint of fang — and once marked, the forest's worse predators tend to leave them be.
A Xochitlani legionnaire likely still carries their mark, a visible reminder that they grew up somewhere the forest itself chose to claim them. They tend to be quietly watchful and unbothered by wilderness that spooks everyone else in the Legion.
Naming a Xochitlani Character
Xochitlani carry three names, each earned rather than simply given. The first name (a color) comes from the mother at birth. The second name arrives when the forest-mark appears, agreed on by three adults who witness it. The third name comes from a deed performed, drawn from the culture's folklore, and can change again after a greater deed. For simplicity, roll or pick a first and second name below — the third name is best decided at the table once the character has done something worth naming.
| # | First Name (color) | Second Name (mark-given) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Amber | Quiet-Root |
| 2 | Ash | Longshadow |
| 3 | Copper | Thornwatch |
| 4 | Ember | Starling-Eyed |
| 5 | Indigo | Stillwater |
| 6 | Jade | Moss-Walker |
| 7 | Marigold | Nightpath |
| 8 | Obsidian | Farsight |
| 9 | Ochre | Stone-Bitten |
| 10 | Rose | Whisperleaf |
| 11 | Silver | Moon-Marked (traditionally denotes an orphan) |
| 12 | Umber | Deep-Rooted |
Black is reserved as a first name for exiles and treaty-breakers — a Xochitlani character wouldn't normally choose it.
