Khemtar is a land of sun-scorched oases and ancient crypts, where the dead are honored as carefully as the living and sometimes guarded just as fiercely. Khemtari are sandstone-brown-skinned, eyes often kohl-rimmed against the glare, and raised with a deep reverence for ancestors and for Ankhar, the jackal-faced god of death who watches over the passage of the soul. Many Khemtari serve as tomb-guards or ritual keepers in their youth — standing long, motionless watches against grave-robbers and worse — and that discipline tends to stay with them for life. Speech is often slow and proverbial: stone endures, and so, Khemtari like to say, should they.

A Khemtari legionnaire is often quietly stoic, measuring their own worth by how many comrades make it to dawn, and carrying some small funerary token — a scarab, a bead, a scrap of ward-inscribed cloth — as protection against corruption and fear. Being far from home weighs on them more than they'll usually admit; a proper rest for one's ka is not a small thing to leave to chance.
